Abstract

The present study is a project-based learning research for piano pedagogy. The study aimed to develop a piano music book using Indonesian folksongs as the main material that may help the Indonesian children in learning piano, and be familiar with their culture and songs. The researcher developed the material using the theory from Alfred’s Little Mozart, John Thompson’s Easy Piano Course, Jane and James Bastien, Alfred’s Piano Basic, Mike’s music room, Hal Leonard’s Piano Library, Piano for Preschool, and Making Music Fun. The piano music book was tested by four music major students minor in piano. The participants of the study were seven children ages 5-9 years old taking piano lessons in AUP and in Indonesia. The piano music book were used by the by the participants. Afterwards, they were asked to play the songs of each lesson in the piano music book. After using the piano music book, the participants were able to play the music clearly. Furthermore, they have improved sight reading skills, understood the basic theory of music, and gained knowledge about the Indonesian Folksongs.
