Abstract

This study aims to investigate students’ perceptions of learning English vocabulary using the Essential Vocabulary Application. It involved 20 eighth-grade students from a private junior high school in North Sumatera, Indonesia. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews. Results revealed that students generally responded positively to the application, highlighting its usefulness, ease of use, interactivity, and motivational aspects. The findings were categorized into five main themes: effectiveness in learning vocabulary, user-friendliness, engaging interactivity, increased confidence and motivation, and user satisfaction. Students appreciated features such as quizzes, interactive games, and offline access, which supported autonomous and enjoyable learning. However, some students suggested the addition of a translation feature to enhance comprehension. The study concludes that the Essential Vocabulary Application has the potential to support vocabulary acquisition effectively. It offers practical implications for educators and developers seeking to integrate mobile-assisted language learning tools in English language teaching
